Slaughterhouse Five @ Theatre Works

Slaughterhouse Five @ Theatre Works

A theatrical adaptation of one of the most loved, important novels of the 20th Century.

This all happened, more or less. The war parts, anyway, are pretty much true. The aliens, spaceships, human zoo and assassination, perhaps less so. But there really was a city called Dresden and it really was firebombed during a war that was really fought by children. And Kurt Vonnegut Jnr really did witness all that fire and death as a prisoner of war. And he wrote a book about it. And award-winning playwright Fleur Kilpatrick really has adapted it for the stage to be performed by people no older than the ones we once sent to war.

“This is a story I’ve always wanted to put on stage,” says Fleur. “It is a deeply painful and messy story – it makes war look foolish and embarrassing – but it is also very funny, full of delicious sci-fi, porn and aliens.”

Fleur is collaborating with Theatre Works and Monash Uni Student Theatre to create an intense, fast-paced, and darkly comical retelling of Kurt Vonnegut’s experience of the bombing of Dresden during WWII. Through a weird and wonderful mix of sci-fi and sex, Vonnegut tells a deeply personal survival story of a boy sent to war, who witnessed a horrific massacre. As Vonnegut said, “I don’t think human beings had ever been killed that fast”.

It will begin like this, “Listen: Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time.”

It will end like this “Poo-tee-weet?”

Where The Boys Are - The Connie Francis Story @ Alex Theatre

The musical presented in a cabaret style, depicts the life of Rock’s first female superstar, Connie Francis and leads the audience into the era when Rock n’Roll ruled the world.

The presentation is live and aided with video contribution exposes the myth from the early recordings flops released through MGM to the top forty hits and the bandstand years.

The cabaret scene introduces a segment with Bobby Darin that ends in a duet and even Elvis has a cameo reference.

The International success commencing from her Italian heritage expanded into Europe, UK and the Latinos markets and her popularity travelled as far as the land of the Rising Sun.

Some chart toppers in the show are performed in Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese.

The movie years apart from her starring roles in four movies her voice was dubbed by movie stars such as Tuesday Weld and Jane Mansfield and used in Award winning theme songs.

The denouement is very Hitchcockian with an emotional tear jerking ballad performed and recorded by the pop diva to remember what happened in that memorable summer of November 1963.

The War On The F*#king Election 2019 @ Alex Theatre
Apr 26 @ 7:15 pm – 9:15 pm
The War On The F*#king Election 2019 @ Alex Theatre

The upcoming Federal Election will be full of suspense. Who will be the Liberal leader that week? How will Labor squander its unassailable lead? Will Antony Green’s computer crash? Will there be any National Party MPs not embroiled in sex scandals by then? What was the name of the Greens leader again?

The Chaser’s Charles Firth has teamed up with The Shovel’s James Schloeffel to bring you the most inaccurate guide to Election 2019. They are joined by Australia’s best television satirists: Mark Humphries (ABC-TV 7:30) and Freudian Nip’s Victoria Zerbst and Jenna Owen (SBS-TV The Feed).

Staged in the ‘National Tallyroom’ at the Alex Theatre in St Kilda, the show re-creates all the drama of an election night without the boring speeches. Includes:

How to be a “female” in the Liberal Party
How it all falls apart: Labor’s Plan for the first 100 days
Live Audience Quiz: Are you a member of One Nation?
