Behind the Scenes of Hotel Esplanade @ Hotel Esplanade | Saint Kilda | Victoria | Australia

Traversing design, music, art, food and booze: a chance to hear first-hand the inspiration behind the restoration of this beloved and historic St Kilda hotel.

VENUE
Lovingly known by locals as The Espy, Hotel Esplanade is a 140-year-old iconic seaside pub.

“I’ve never seen anything like the way Melbournians are connected to a building. It’s not the business, it’s not the people, it’s actually this building. Everyone has an Espy story and everyone is connected to it somehow in some way.” Doug Maskiel, Hotel Esplanade Director

GUIDE
Tours will be led by one of the owners behind the mammoth task of breathing life into the previously run down old pub: Matt, Andy, Doug or Tom.

“It is impossible not to be impressed by their commitment to their custodial role of such a beloved building.” The Age, 2018

Perpetual Frustration Machine @ Theatre Works | Saint Kilda | Victoria | Australia

PERPETUAL FRUSTRATION MACHINE is a raw thrust into the human drives of our desires, combining text and the physical discipline of circus. Co-creators, Stephen Sewell and Zebastian Hunter, have imagined a circus drama that explores desire for the unattainable.

“Our Desire, this destructive void seeks completion in our modern modes of success: recognition, money, violence, sex and domestic bliss. We all want everything and we want it now.”

PERPETUAL FRUSTRATION MACHINE features a startling array of acts – Glass Walking, Handstands, Contortion, Acrobatics, Aerial Hoop, Roue Cyr, Dart Throwing, Table Slides, Juggling and much more – all used to express the extreme depths of our modern affliction.

Comical, poignant, frenetic and poetic this joyous dance of daring circus invites you to cavort along with us as we seek release from this ecstatic prison of our own making.

Tobias Wonderdog @ Prince Bandroom | Saint Kilda | Victoria | Australia

Tobias Wonderdog is the appellation of Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Mat Weaven who is no debutant to the music industry but under this new title is releasing his debut single ‘Not Bliss’ (Out October 19) – listen here | download here | download via airit.

Drawing from influences such as Midnight Oil, John Frusciante, Mat Weaven has composed a compelling and timeless alt-country single.

Using his connections made in the early days of his career Weaven called in Mark Kennedy (Men at Work, Jimmy Barnes and many more) to co-produce the track and play percussion.

Boasting the experience of Kennedy’s song-writing experience alongside Weaven’s classical trumpet upbringing, touch on the acoustic guitar and alluring vocals, ‘Not Bliss’ is a number that is dynamically rich and emotionally stirring that bursts with that Australian country, light-hearted disposition.

‘Not Bliss’ Flows from soft and sparse verses into sparking choruses with layers of lush tones from guitars and organs held together with a steady rock beat. It all culminates into a tidy rock ballad about simplicity that lets the imagination run wild across the vast countryside and over the mountaintops.

Ultimately, the track is about connection, Weaven states:

“I think as people, we lose out on connectivity these days and get too caught up in feeling sorry for ourselves. We should destroy the myth of what we call normal and practice in synergy as well as constructive criticism”.

Excited to be releasing this new single and adding something of their on to the country-rock music scene, Tobias Wonderdog have plenty more to come after this debut.

Tex Perkins & Matt Walker @ Hotel Esplanade
Dec 20 @ 7:30 pm
Tex Perkins & Matt Walker @ Hotel Esplanade | Saint Kilda | Victoria | Australia

DOORS 8.00pm // SHOWTIME 9.00pm Tex Perkins and Matt Walker bring their blues swamp-groove to the Gershwin room w/ specials guests. Performing many new originals plus, of course, some Cruel Sea covers!

It’s understandably difficult to pull together a coherent picture of a man whose career has taken in everything from the ground-breaking experimental punktonica of Sydney mid-80s noiseniks Thug to the lilting, dark country of his recent material with the Dark Horses.

From the hard edged pub rock of the Beasts Of Bourbon’s, a snarling slice of filthy pub rock to the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea, whose extraordinary 1991 single ‘This Is Not The Way Home’ placed Perkins’ world-weary growl in a new musical context and heralded the emergence of an entirely original yet archetypically Australian sound.

Then there’s the Tex, Don & Charlie albums, which saw Perkins joining forces with the legendary Don Walker, Cold Chisel’s pianist and master songwriter and son of the Clarence Valley, and Charlie Owen, previously Australia’s best kept musical secret.

Now is Tex’s exciting new (and long overdue) collaboration with Matt Walker (a great artist in his own right) for duo shows. It’s a blues swamp-groove kinda thing that’s a little reminiscent of some of the things in Tex’s back catalogue. Many new originals inhabit the set list, but see them now while they still have to flesh out the set with a few Cruel Sea covers!

“Tex has the swagger, presence and indomitable attitude that comes from years of fronting some of Australia’s most intense and spirited rock’n’roll bands. His take-no-prisoners approach to performance comes with the sensibility of an artist committed to the subtle (and often unsubtle) nuances of his craft. Throw in an astonishing voice full of power and depth, mix it with a dry and sardonic sense of humour and what emerges is the reason there is only one Tex Perkins”. – Stuart Coupe
