The Beasts @ Prince Bandroom

After an emotional final performance with the Beasts of Bourbon, Tex Perkins thought of getting the band’s members, past and present into a recording studio just to celebrate the band and see what resulted.

Sadly, bassist Brian Hooper died a week after the show.

But weeks later former Beasts Charlie Owen, Boris Sujdovic, Tony Pola, Spencer Jones, Kim Salmon and Tex Perkins assembled without a plan, save for the crazy M.O. employed back in 1983 when the Beasts first recorded The Axemans Jazz in that fateful 8 hour session. As back then, they went at it!

Songs weren’t so much learned as ideas thrown together and recorded the moment they coalesced.

The result is a collection of pieces with names like ‘Pearls Before Swine’, ‘My Shit’s Fucked Up’, ‘Drunk On A Train’ and ‘On My Back’ in a raucous celebration of their own Beastliness.

Spencer was sadly only around long enough to make it onto one track .

But what a track – witty observations from the hospital bed entitled ‘At The Hospital’.

This isn’t The Beasts of Bourbon. It would need to have Jonesy on every track to be that!

But loudly and proudly this is: The Beasts Still Here

Shakespeare – The Complete Works @ Alex Theatre
Feb 25 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Shakespeare - The Complete Works @ Alex Theatre | Saint Kilda | Victoria | Australia

On the last Monday of every month, February through November every year until July of 2022, every single one of the 40 plays attributed to William Shakespeare will be read in full at the Alex Theatres STK, in chronological order through his entire career, from The Two Gentlemen of Verona to The Two Noble Kinsmen. Ever-reliable warhorses such as Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream will sit alongside rarely seen works like King John and Henry VIII, with his several collaborations with other writers, including Edward III and Sir Thomas More, will also be read. Cue scripts will be used for many of the readings, and where possible, all music will be performed live.

“I will tell you the beginning, and if it please your ladyships, you may see the end, for the best is yet to do” As You Like It, 2/5

The remaining 2019 readings will boast some of Shakespeare’s earliest blockbusters successes, including Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The project has been conceived and will be coordinated, by actor and director David Meadows, a veteran of dozens of independent Shakespeare productions around Australia and internationally. David is a WAAPA graduate with several Hamlets, Iagos, and Petruccio’s to his name, as well as a Shylock, a Macbeth, and a Mercutio, and directing credits as far afield as Mexico. He is a former Fellow at Shakespeare’s Globe in London and is to date the only actor in the world to have mounted an online recital of the complete sonnets, which remains a free resource on YouTube.

“Like my sonnet project on YouTube, I want to provide everyone who is passionate about Shakespeare’s contribution to theatre, and literature, and humanity, frankly, with the opportunity to have experienced at least one performance of every single one of the 40 plays that bear his name, and since fully staged productions are often not financially feasible in this day and age, giving full readings of them all seems to me to be an elegant way to split the difference.” David Meadows, 2018

The adventure continues on Monday 24 September with The Taming of the Shrew, Henry VI Part One on Monday 29 October, and Henry VI Part Two on Monday 26 November; after a two-month break over the festive season, the New Year will see the Wars of the Roses come to an end, with Henry VI Part Three on February 25 and Richard III on Monday 25 March 2019.

The 2019 readings will boast some of Shakespeare’s earliest blockbusters successes.

The 2018 readings will be:
August 27 – The Two Gentlemen of Verona
September 24 – The Taming of the Shrew
October 29 – Henry VI Part One
November 26 – Henry VI Part Two

And then picking up the Wars of the Roses cycle again in 2019 with:
February 25 – Henry VI Part Three
March 25 – Richard III

DIRECTED BY: presented in association with Vass Productions, the international Actors Ensemble and Circle in the Sand.

Come and enjoy a free evening listening to the works of Shakespeare.
