A St Kilda School With More Than 140 Years of History⚫⚪🔴🧡

Better known locally as SKiPPS, the school has been part of St Kilda since 1882, opening as the Victorian government school system expanded following the Education Act of 1872 and the huge demand for new schools that followed.

Its striking Fitzroy Street building was designed by architect Henry Bastow in the Gothic Revival style and has been part of the local streetscape ever since.

Generations of St Kilda kids have passed through its doors, including former Governor-General Sir Zelman Cowen, cricket legend Bill Ponsford and artist William Dargie.

But this is far from a school stuck in the past.

SKiPPS has a strong focus on creativity, sustainability and connection to the local community. There`s an impressive school kitchen garden, chickens and plenty of opportunities for students to get hands-on with growing food and learning about sustainability.

School life also extends well beyond the classroom, with biennial fetes, fundraising events and community activities bringing families together.

And inside the heritage building is one of the school`s most remarkable features - the WWI Honour Board, created by artist George Dancey from mosaics and copper, commemorating around 150 former students who served in the Great War.

More than 140 years of history, right in the heart of St Kilda.
