⚡Fitzroy Street Flashback! ⚡
Each February the Pride Centre becomes the centre of attention in Fitzroy Street.
It’s an eye‑catching building - truly an inspired design from its architectural double‑team, BAU and Grant Amon Architects - both locals, incidentally, with offices right here on Fitzroy Street.
So, what actually makes an architectural design “inspired”?
The beauty of its geometry and form?
The expression of its cultural functions and meanings?
Its embrace of the surrounding context?
All of the above, no doubt.
But I’m wondering if there’s also an inspiration from the fourth dimension - from an ancestral past. Allow me to introduce Racine and Voltaire, the grand Victorian Boom‑style pair of townhouses that stood on the Pride Centre site between c1891 and the mid‑20th century.
Completely different generations, yet so much in common. Grandiose exuberance, lavish façade modelling, a multi‑storey composition of central cavernous openings flanked by narrower elliptical openings, all topped with a great grandstand roof and party deck. Even their racy French names seem to foreshadow the theatrical and libertarian spirit of their 21st‑century successor.
I don’t know if our architects ever saw this picture before designing the Pride Centre. We should ask them.
